What neck pain involves
The cervical spine is built for mobility — it carries the weight of your head through a wide range of motion all day long. That flexibility makes it vulnerable to strain, joint restriction, and disc problems. Neck pain can stay local, or it can refer into the head, shoulders, and arms.
What causes it
The neck pain we see most often traces back to:
- Posture and "tech neck" — hours looking down at screens loading the cervical joints and muscles
- Work-related strain — repetitive positions, overhead work, or sustained desk posture
- Prior injury — old whiplash or sports injuries that left lingering joint dysfunction
- Disc involvement — cervical disc bulges or herniation pressing on nerves
Symptoms and when to seek care
Stiffness, reduced range of motion, aching, and headaches that start at the base of the skull are common and usually mechanical. Pay closer attention when pain radiates.
Pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness radiating into the arm or hand; severe pain after trauma; or neck pain with fever, severe headache, or coordination changes. We screen for these and order or refer for advanced imaging when warranted.
How chiropractic helps
Manual adjustment restores motion to restricted cervical joints, which can reduce pain and the headaches that often accompany neck dysfunction. When a disc is involved and nerve symptoms are radiating into the arm, gentle Cox flexion-distraction can be applied to the cervical spine to relieve that pressure.
Our approach at Hunterdon Back Pain Center
We evaluate range of motion, do orthopedic and neurological testing specific to the neck, and take digital X-rays in-office when indicated. Your doctor calibrates technique to your age and condition — we use everything from traditional manual adjustment to gentle instrument-assisted methods for patients who prefer or need them.
What to expect from treatment
Postural and joint-driven neck pain often improves quickly. Disc-related or long-standing cervical conditions take a more structured plan. Your doctor will outline the expected number of visits after the evaluation, and we'll combine in-office care with practical guidance on posture, workstation setup, and sleep position so the results hold.
