What whiplash is
Whiplash is an injury to the neck caused by a rapid back-and-forth motion — the "acceleration-deceleration" of a collision. It strains and sometimes tears the soft tissues of the cervical spine and can disturb the alignment and motion of the joints. Most whiplash happens in rear-end auto accidents, but it also occurs in sports and falls.
Why symptoms often appear days later
One of the most important things to know about whiplash: you can feel fine at the scene and develop significant pain and stiffness 24–72 hours later, as inflammation sets in. That delay is exactly why people skip evaluation — and why untreated whiplash so often becomes chronic neck pain.
Symptoms and when to seek care
Common symptoms include neck pain and stiffness, headaches (often starting at the base of the skull), shoulder and upper-back pain, reduced range of motion, and sometimes dizziness or fatigue.
Severe pain, numbness or weakness in the arms, difficulty walking, or any neurological symptoms after a collision. Whiplash should always be evaluated promptly, even when symptoms seem mild at first.
