Flemington is a straight run north on Route 31 — about fourteen miles, twenty-five minutes on a normal day, longer if the Flemington Circle is having a moment. It is the one drive in our service area with no highway leg, so give yourself the buffer.
Flemington is Hunterdon's county seat and does not look like the rest of the county. Median household income is $69,978 against a countywide $136,901; the median age is thirty-four; and 32% of residents are Hispanic or Latino. It is also the densest town we serve — 4,876 people in 1.1 square miles.
It is the one place in our service area where “long NYC commute” would be the wrong story. Flemington's mean commute is 22.7 minutes, the shortest of any community we cover. People here largely work here: county government, the courts, Hunterdon Medical Center up Route 31, and the retail corridor on 202 and 31. That means the physical demands we see are working demands, not commuting ones.
Flemington residents work close to home, and the local employment base is hands-on — county facilities, health care, retail, food service, and the 202/31 corridor. Standing shifts, lifting, and repetitive reaching load the low back and shoulders differently from a desk. Care built for a desk worker often misses what a retail or hospital shift actually does to a body.
The Hunterdon County Courthouse hosted the Lindbergh kidnapping trial, and over 65% of the borough is on the National Register. The Union Hotel across the street is finally under redevelopment. Court, county, and legal work means long seated days and long standing days in the same week — an inconsistent load that is harder on the spine than a consistent one.
Flemington is 32% Hispanic or Latino, a profile unlike anywhere else in Hunterdon.
